Take time to visit the Museum via the Information Centre. Enjoy the displays depicting the life of the early settlers.

Gabriels Gully
Site of the first major goldrush in NZ

Anthem House, 17 Lancaster Street
The house where JJ Wood lived, who composed the New Zealand National Anthem.

Cemetery
Dating from 1864, is notable for its elaborate Victorian ironwork, beautiful Celtic crosses and the Chinese section. Buried here too, along with many illustrious pioneers, is John J. Woods, the composer of the New Zealand National Anthem. Records available at the Information Centre.

Chinese Camp
Situated on SH8, 2km from the township. A protected archaeological site with plans for extensive development.

Domain
The Cairn was erected to commemorate the discovery of gold in Gabriels Gully in 1862 by Gabriel Read.

Lawrence Domain
Lawrence's leafy backdrop! Planted by schoolchildren at the beginning of last century, with hundreds of saplings shipped from Wellington. Hike the Domaine Trail, visit the Gabriel's Gully Jubilee monument. Contact the Information Centre, in Ross Pl. for advice on other hiking trails nearby.


The Peace Garden Corner of Peel St.and State Highway 8
Tranquil reminder of World War I, featuring trees and shrubs planted in memory of fallen soldiers. The elegant colonnaded cenotaph is flood lit at night. Park benches and children's play equipment invite you to linger awhile.

Florists own garden, with carefully selected plants displayed in a charming cottage setting. Perennials propagated from those featured in the garden, also on sale. Open year-round, gold coin admission.


Bellview Gardens Gabriel's Gully Road, Lawrence 034859149
Lush native plantings surround a series of trout ponds in this large garden enhanced by dry stone walls and goldrush era artifacts. Bellevue attracts a wide variety of bird life. The graceful snowy Kotuku is a regular visitor, as are many species of waterfowl.Bellbirds and Tuis vie for the nectar from flax flowers. Set on the edge of the garden, a tiny heritage cottage, charmingly furnished as it may have been in the 1880s, completes the attractions.


Weatherstons Harts Daffodils "Dusty" Kim Murtagh Ph: 03 485 9968
Planted in 1895 by the Hart family of the nearby Black Horse Brewery, daffodils carpet the 10 acre site with a profusion of creams and golds each spring.
