Lawrence Gabriels Gully 150 years

The Lawrence-Tuapeka community is gearing up to celebrate the 150th anniversary of perhaps the most significant discovery in New Zealand’s history – gold.

Gold, in the payable form, was first struck by Gabriel Read near Lawrence on 25th May 1861. Read, an Australian-born prospector was initially told he was on a ‘wild goose chase’ but his discovery, in the gully that now bears his name, changed the course of history and laid a foundation for both Otago and New Zealand. By July 1861, the Tuapeka area was very much immersed in the gold rush, with the district’s population swelling to over 11,000 compared to the less than 6,000 in Dunedin at the time.

In 2011, attention will again turn to Lawrence as it celebrates 150 years since what was essentially the birth of our nation. Realising the significance of such an occasion, the Lawrence Community will be hosting a four day celebration, Gabriel’s Gully Goldrush 150th from Friday 18th to Monday 21st March 2011.

The four day celebration will feature a drama which re-enacts the Goldrush with treks and walks to take us back in time to the 1860’s. With music, historical tours and displays, visual art, drama and family games and fun, there’s something for everyone, young or old.

Come and celebrate the past connecting with the present and be part of this national celebration.

Organisers are calling for submissions of stories and artefacts from the Goldrush to form a special exhibition over the four-day event. They are particularly interested to hear from descendants and relations of the early goldminers and prospectors, or anyone with any information on the Tuapeka Goldfields area. Historical records and artefacts will be displayed at The Goldrush Heritage Centre. The programme also includes Pioneer Stories – an opportunity for people to retell Goldrush stories passed down from their ancestors. Lawrence Annual Summer Arts Festival

Arts and heritage will intertwine in the historic gold rush village as a huge programme of arts and entertainment comes together.

A map will guide festival participants from the Historic buildings where some working artists will be displaying their skills to the beautiful ground of “The Ark” where you can stroll at your leisure and enjoy exhibits and working artists in a garden setting.

This is one weekend in the country not to be missed

The 3km walk /run, 12 km bike, 1.5 km walk run incorporates some of the historic sites around the town

SUMMARY

All participants need to register by 22nd October 2010
Age limit must be 12 years old by 1st August 2010
Limited to 200 entries
Registration will open at 11.00 am
Pre race briefing and warm up 1.30 pm
Race start time 2pm
Prize giving & spot prizes after the last participant finishes

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION
Duathlon starts at the Lawrence Gymkhana grounds then run/walk to Weatherstons and the old Harts Black Horse Brewery. The tracks here are off road with 2 short steep climbs, flat old water races and open paddocks. Walk/run back to Gymkhana grounds to transition for bike leg. Ride across paddock down to Irvine St, then onto main street (Ross Place) down to Back St and onto the road to Gabriels Gully. This is all tar sealed .Down into Gabriels Gully onto a gravel road, loop around the Gully then return to Gymkhana grounds the same way. Drop bike at transition walk/run across paddock again to Irvine St, walk/run around the block on tar seal and gravel. Finish is at the Gymkhana gates.

TRANSITION

Transition opens at 11.00am and closes 15 mins before debriefing
While race is in progress only participants are allowed in the transition area
No equipment to be removed until the last participant has finished
Participants who have finished, please do not rest/relax or linger within the transition area

EVENT BRIEFING
All participants must attend the verbal briefing

GENERAL NOTES

The roads are open for normal traffic so road rules apply
Participants must behave in a manner that is safe,fair and demonstrates good sports conduct
The marshals are on the course to help and direct you. Please treat them with respect and obey their instructions
No earphones or headsets. No animals or prams
Please report any accident or incident to a marshal
If you pull out of the race at anytime please advise the nearest marshal and the timekeepers when you return to transition
Please give assistance to fellow competitors in need of help

SPECTATORS

Please do not follow participants around the course
Keep clear of the course within the gymkhana grounds and around transition
